Why Does Rachel Ask, “Who’s FICA” When She Receives Her Pay Check?

FICA stands for Federal Insurance Contributions Act.
Anyone who earns income in the United States will have to pay a portion of that income to the United States government. One of the ways this happens is through FICA. Employee income is sets by the employer, and tax deductions happen only at the time of payment. This results in a pay check amount that’s lower than the simple math you might do in your head, when estimating your earnings.

What is a Birthday Suit? (English Expression)

This English expression is a bit of a joke. If you are “wearing your birthday suit”, then you are naked. Your birth day suit is the suit that you were wearing when you were born. Of course, when you were born, you weren’t wearing a suit at all, because you were a naked baby.

The day that you were born was a very auspicious day, don’t you agree? Since your birthday was a very special day of celebration, people should dress formally for the occasion. That means everyone should wear a suit. However, babies are born naked. So the only suit that you can wear on your birth day is “nothing”.

To Close Someone Out (English Expression)

“To close someone out” (also “to shut someone out”) means to stop connecting with them emotionally. This usually means that you stop talking, stop touching, and/or stop sharing your emotions. You’re still present, but you no longer let that person “inside of you”. They can no longer see what you’re thinking and feeling. They can no longer go inside of you, and see the world from your perspective. You’ve closed them out (of your experience of the world).
