In Season 8, Episode 5 of Friends (‘The One With Rachel’s Date”), Joey discovers that Chandler’s middle name is Muriel. Joey finds this extremely funny because Muriel is a name given to baby girls. Also, Muriel was a popular baby name given to girls around 1920. The name is no longer a popular choice for babies being born today.
So, Chandler’s middle name makes Joey think of a 75-year-old woman.
Most English names in North America have a small time period during which they were popular. The name “Muriel” was most popular around 1920.
Name Popularity Over Time, United States: Muriel
Name Popularity Over Time, United States: Maddison
If you asked me to quickly name a popular name for a girl in high school in 2020, my first response would be “Maddison”. Look how quickly it became popular!
Name Popularity Over Time, United States: Chris (That’s ME!)
As for me, Chris? I was born in 1981. When I was growing up, in my school classroom, there were 5 boys names Christopher one year!!
Indeed, if you ever have to name yourself or your child with an English name, it might be worth considering which names are popular at the time, so that the person with the name fits in. You don’t want someone like Joey to laugh at you. 😂
However, if I can give you a piece of advice, please don’t choose any of the Top 10 popular names of the time. It was very confusing when the teacher said “Chris”, and five of us answered her! Maybe choose a name whose popularity is between #11 and #200?
It’s something to consider… 🙂
